Mount Ive Station Field Day

Friday 21 & Saturday 22 June 2007

The first of the WaterSmart Pastoral Production Project Field Day’s was held at Mount Ive Station over two days.

Around 130 graziers, farmers, manufacturers and suppliers gathered to share information and ideas about stock watering technologies and methods.

The field day kicked off with a live broadcast of the ABC’s Country Hour where DKCRC project officer Colleen James spoke with Annabelle Homer about the WaterSmart™ Project and how it effects Mount Ive.

Mount Ive Station owner/manager Len Newton then demonstrated and spoke about the remote monitoring system in use and the benefits of having the telemetry.

The ABC’s Drew Radford spoke with John Crosby of Ag-Float about the recycled tyres being
used to reduce evaporation from dams.

Landholders then had the opportunity to see Pages Working Dogs in action and get some training tips from Ben Page.

Presentations were held in the main auditorium covering:

  • Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre with Mark Ashley
  • The WaterSmart Pastoral Production Project with Colleen James
  • Desaln8 - Desalination applications being developed for the pastoral industry with Brett Pearson
  • Ag-Float - Evaporation control devices with John Crosby

The field tour kicked off with the first stop at airstrip bore with the Mono solar pump pumping from 60 metres over hill to a water point 30 metres higher and 3km away. Brenton Brook from  Mono and Leo Cabooter from E P Windmills and Pumps were on hand for technical advice.

The second Stop on the field trip showed the Ag-Float evaporation control devices at Little Richard’s Dam and John Crosby spoke about how and why the tyres work to reduce evaporation losses. The third stop was Cuba bore where Tim Stockman spoke about the telemetry system in use on Mount Ive and Len Newton demonstrated the ‘virtual water run’ and told of the benefits he has seen since implementing the system.
