Why do we need this
project?
There is a wide
range of new technologies and ideas to help landholders use water
better, but it is difficult to know what might work in particular
situations and what is worth the investment.
The way water is
delivered to stock, where watering points are located and how they
are managed can have a big impact on the operation of your
business. It can effect the condition of your country, the
sustainability of your enterprise and the costs of operation.
This project
will help landholders learn about what equipment is available,
evaluate the costs and benefits of equipment and ideas, and share
experiences about what works and what does not.
What is
this project about?
The WaterSmart
Pastoral Production™ project combines the best technologies
in stock water storage and delivery on pastoral properties to help
improve stock management, control total grazing pressure and
pastoral country condition.
The project will provide a one-stop-shop for information about
water management through this web site and publications and is
working through three case study demonstration sites. The
demonstration sites cover a different range of grazing scales
and infrastructure configurations, different abilities of pastoral
properties to invest and different environments in the Gawler
Ranges of South Australia, channel country in Western Queensland
and central Australia.
Benefits to
landholders
The WaterSmart
Pastoral Production™ project will improve the skills and
knowledge of pastoralists by demonstrating, through workshops,
field days and trial display sites, new and innovative stock water
management technologies and stock management practices which seek
to improve the economic, environmental and overall production
sustainability of pastoral enterprises. Both project members
and pastoralists will carry out the research and implementation of
trial sites, which will ensure on property relevance and
‘real world’ operational outcomes.
