Abstract

Internationally and within Australia, Indigenous land management activities are being implemented in an attempt to achieve both biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development. There is little information regarding strategies to realise these dual goals in desert Australia. Based on a case study of Warlpiri people, this research explores the structures and processes required for land management activities to generate biodiversity and livelihood outcomes in desert Australia. It highlights the importance of cross-cultural relationships and real collaboration. It also outlines capacity building and training requirements to assist Aboriginal land management activities in attaining both conservation and livelihood outcomes.
